Driving and your health: what you need to know
11 December 2025
Getting behind the wheel means taking responsibility for safety. Your health plays a big role in keeping yourself and others safe on the road.
Your responsibilities
If your health or medication affects your ability to drive safely, you must let us know.
By law, drivers must report anything that could affect safe driving, including:
- a medical condition or vision issues
- taking medication that could reduce alertness or reaction time.
Doctors must also notify authorities if a patient’s condition could make driving unsafe.
Older drivers
Older drivers often take more care and fewer risks on the road. But getting older affects our reaction times, vision, hearing and overall health. Certain medications can also reduce our driving ability.
If you are worried about someone’s driving, here's what you can do:
- Encourage them to talk to their doctor.
- Offer to go with them to the appointment.
- Raise your concerns with Service SA.
The driver might be asked to complete a health assessment and, if needed, a driving test.
