Overseas driver licensing changes
28 March 2025
From Thursday, 1 May 2025, South Australia will introduce new rules for car drivers and motorcycle riders with overseas-issued licences from some countries.
The change aims to improve road safety by strengthening requirements for automatic recognition of overseas driver’s licences in Australia. It also aligns with updates to Australia's licensing systems.
The identified countries are:
- Bulgaria
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China)
- Hungary
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Poland
- Republic of Cyprus
- Republic of Korea (South Korea)
- Republic of Serbia
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- South Africa
- Taiwan
When changes come into effect on 1 May 2025, overseas licence holders from any of the identified countries will need to complete extra training to get a South Australian driver’s licence.
These changes do not affect any drivers from these countries who:
- have already obtained a South Australian or interstate driver’s licence
- are visiting Australia.
Visitors can still drive with a valid overseas licence, if they follow the conditions of that licence.
