Updated Rider Safe program prepares new riders for the road

9 December 2024

A more extensive training program to boost motor bike rider safety has been released in South Australia.

Rider Safe is the practical training component of the Motor Bike Graduated Licensing Scheme.

Increased training for learner riders

As part of the updated Rider Safe program, riders must now complete more training if they are applying for either:

  • a motor bike learner’s permit
  • an R-DATE licence.

Key changes include introducing on-road assessments that complement the existing training. The current curriculum will expand on safety awareness, judgement and decision-making.

The Rider Safe Motor Bike Learners Course has changed from two half days to two full days. It includes a supervised on-road ride, so riders can build their confidence in key motor bike skills.

Riders who complete the Motor Bike Learners Course will then take the Motor Bike Pre-Licence Course. These courses will help riders build on their skills. It will also provide coaching and feedback before they take their Motor Bike Licence Assessment.

Online tests

Online tests are required for all learner’s permit applicants.

The program aims to ensure new riders are ‘road ready’ to improve the safety of riders and road users.

Future riders can complete their online tests and book into the new courses using their mySAGOV account. If they don’t have an account, they will need to create a new account.
