Individually constructed vehicles now eligible for the Conditional Registration Scheme

24 November 2023

Individually constructed vehicles are a one-off vehicle, built to an individual plan or design with a new frame/chassis – frequently using parts from a range of different cars or motorbikes. These projects are typically the result of hundreds of hours of work and must use high quality components that all correctly function together to ensure safe operation, performance and compliance with the relevant standards.

The Conditional Registration Scheme for historic, left-hand drive, street rod and individually constructed vehicles offers reduced registration fees for participating vehicle enthusiasts in exchange for limited road access for their vehicles each year. In recognition of their limited use, these vehicles are exempt from registration and stamp duty on compulsory third-party insurance fees and only pay a compulsory third-party insurance premium, administration fees, and a reduced emergency services and lifetime support levy.

The scheme allows owners to drive their vehicle up to 90 days during any 12-month registration period, providing many opportunities for leisurely drives and exhibition at classic car events and festivals.

To be eligible, vehicle owners must be a financial member of an approved car club that recognises individually constructed vehicles, keep a log of each trip, and not hire out or be paid a fee for the use of the vehicle. Learn more about club recognition under the Conditional Registration Scheme.

The expansion of this scheme comes after consultation with car clubs and other motoring stakeholders - with the majority of clubs favouring a broader inclusion of any vehicle that meets the criteria, rather than only historic replicas.
